Nonprofit animal welfare organization
The Michigan Humane Society, founded in 1877 and in 2017 marking 140 years of community service and compassionate animal care, is a nonprofit animal welfare organization that places more than 11,000 homeless animals each year. The longest-serving animal welfare organization in the state, Michigan Humane Society has achieved its goal of 100 percent adoption of healthy and treatable animals. At its three adoption and veterinary centers in Detroit, Rochester Hills and Westland, the Michigan Humane Society provides comprehensive veterinary services, animal cruelty investigations and rescue response, extensive community and professional education, and advocacy for humane treatment.
